A NOW Mormon is a Church member, past or present, that has suffered hurt at the hands of Church leadership.
These are the Neglected Or Wounded Mormons.
The NOW Mormons….an unrecognized demographic.
Due to all the internet content that is now available regarding the Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has sought to regain control of this rough stone rolling by enabling their own appearance of more transparency.
Steven E. Snow, Church Historian said the following:
“I think in the past there was a tendency to keep a lot of the records closed or at least not give access to information. But the world has changed in the last generation-with the access to information on the internet, we can’t continue that pattern; I think in this day and age it’s become apparent that we really do need to provide a series of answers that will help our members better understand these chapters of our history.”
“Most who study our history well understand the context to these matters as far as time and place, but some members of the church, many really, are surprised by some of the things they learn in our history and we want them to be able go to a place where they can read accurate information and be able to seek to understand those historical chapters in the context of time and place and understand that those answers have been approved by the presiding brethren of the church.”
This has come in the form of publishing their own “go to” content on lds.org (one of the official websites of the Church):
-First Vision Accounts (4 first hand accounts, 5 second hand accounts)
-Race and the Priesthood (Disavowing past theories regarding black skin, curses, mixed-race marriages, inferiorities)
-Plural Marriage (Joseph Smith practiced Plural Marriage, with those as young as 14 years old, had sexual relations with some of them, while some were already married to other men, and did not tell his first wife about all of them)
-100 YEARS AGO, there was probably only a handful of Church members that knew about this real Church History and the majority of all Church members at the time probably died without knowing the truth at all
-100 YEARS FROM NOW, generations of Church members will have been raised knowing the “carefully worded” Church history that has been announced recently on lds.org, but probably nothing more due to Church instruction to avoid non-official Church sites
-THE PEOPLE LIVING NOW are having to deal with the fall-out of these admissions, including the doubt and questioning, because the rug has being pulled out from under them;
These are the ignored and unheard members who receive judgement from Church leadership at arms length.
These are the NOW Mormons.
